During the trial of Louise Woodward, the presiding judge, Hiller B. Zobel, the prosecution presented 8 physicians involved in Matthew‘s care. Those 8 physicians were a neurosurgeon, an ophthalmologist, a radiologist, 2 pathologists, and an expert in the child. 

Those 8 physicians testified that Matthew’s injuries were the result of violent shaking and from his head impacting a hard surface. The prosecution said that his injuries were the equivalent of having been thrown from a two-story building. 

Matthew’s injuries occurred three weeks before his death. Matthew had wrist injuries that may have been incurred before Louise arrived at the house. At the lead counsel at Woodward’s trial, Louise‘s attorneys requested that Louise was not given an option of conviction of manslaughter.
